Chapter 3

Trauma Acknowledgement—Lady Godiva and the Women of Salt Spring

The clever reintroduction of Lady Godiva and other forms of action by women on a West Coast island enabled community trauma recovery and restoration. Faced with so many impending traumatic events, communities that align themselves with social movements are shown to be more resilient. In this case, feminism and environmentalism are aligned, inspiring other islanders to act for their children. The persecution of witches today and in the past underlies this work as a lasting trauma that throws a dark shadow on trauma recovery.
